December 2006: Other Religions
November 2006: "Elections – How
do I choose?"
On the evening before the general
elections, we will seek some practical Biblical
direction to help us consider the question, “For whom am
I going to vote?” And no – we won’t be promoting any
specific candidate or party – this is one choice you’ll
have to make yourself!
October 2006: "'Why, God?' continued"
September 2006: "Why, God?"
Exactly five years after the World Trade Center tragedy,
we will wrestle with a question that troubles and
confounds even Christians: if God is as powerful and
loving as he says, why do tragedies happen? Join us on
Monday, September 11, as we explore the Bible’s
teachings on suffering.
August 2006: "The Alien Living Among You"
America is an immigrant nation. The United States has
for centuries offered freedom and opportunity to people
from around the world. Recently, massive marches
(including two in Chicago) and a growing influx of
illegal immigrants have raised the profile of this
issue, and raised questions in the minds of Christians.
What kind of guidance does the Bible give? Is there a
specific position that Christians need to take on this
issue? Where does God's command to love stangers fit in?
Does scripture guide public policy? We won't answer all
the questions, but our study and discussion are bound to
sharpen our consciences and our grasp of the principles
underlying our response to this pressing national issue.
In keeping with the theme of this session, we are
partnering with World Relief (a nonprofit that helps
refugees) to provide backpacks and supplies for
school-age children of refugees living on Chicago’s
north side. World Relief is looking for 70 backpacks. A
good goal for Crossroads would be to donate 10-20 new
backpacks for kids ages 7-17 (though it would be great
to exceed that goal). In each backpack we need notebook
paper, pens, pencils, pencil sharpeners, erasers and
folders/thin binders. If you decide to participate,
bring your backpack(s) to Quest. We'll also be
collecting them at our outdoor service on August 6.
July 2006: The Da Vinci Code Revisited
Killer albino monks? Shadowy art societies?
Christian goddess worship? The Da Vinci Code is back --
in technicolor! Unfortunaltely, so are its controversial
claims. Was Jesus actually married? Was his divinity
literally manufactured by a politicized church? Do the
Dead Sea Scrolls really cast doubt on the teachings of
the New Testament? If recent polls are any indication,
many people are accepting these claims as being
literally true. Whether you’ve read the book, seen the
movie, or just want help in responding to this work of
fiction, join us as we subject these claims to
historical evidence and the biblical record.
June 2006: Make Life Matter – Money Matters
Money is a tool that God gives us to use as we live to
glorify him, serve others, and enjoy his blessings. We
will be better able to do all those things if we
thoughtfully consider how best to manage our financial
resources. Join us as we discuss this important piece of
living a life that matters!
May 2006: Make Life Matter -- The Heart Matters
Today's world is moving fast, and people have less time
to reflect on their life. How do family, friends, and
other significant relationships fit into the pattern of
your life? How can you be intentional about your most
important earthly relationships? As part of our ongoing
workshop series, "Make Life Matter," we turn our
attention to the life of the heart.
April 2006: Make Life Matter – The Spirit Matters
With so many other commitments and pursuits competing
for our time and attention, what happens to the time we
need to set aside to let God nurture our souls? And once
we find that tie,; what do we do? This month we’ll
consider seven essential principles for spiritual
growth, and discuss ways in which we can be intentional
about this highest priority.
March 2006: MORE Freedom of Forgiveness
Forgiving others --
isn't this just basic Christianity? Sunday school stuff?
Apparently not! At our February Quest, we had so much
discussion on this topic that we're continuing this in
March. The simple truth is that forgiving can be hard
even for mature Christians. Often we try to forgive, yet
still feel anger and bitterness. Yet we can learn from
the Bible how to find the freedom of full forgiveness.
Join us as we look for the Bible's guidance on this
challenging subject.
February 2006: The Freedom of Forgiveness
We don’t have to live long before we realize that
forgiveness does not always happen automatically. We may
try to forgive, yet still feel anger and bitterness.
Forgiveness is usually a process we have to learn. We
may not forgive perfectly, but we can learn from the
Bible how to find the freedom of full forgiveness.
January 2006: New Year Priorities The beginning of the year is a good time to reconsider
how we’ve been allotting the time in our days and the
space in our hearts. Make it a priority to join us as we
search the Bible for an eternal perspective on this very
time-sensitive issue!
